SS27 RUNWAY REPORT

The Trends Defining Spring/Summer 2027

Across the Spring/Summer 2027 runways, designers are reworking familiar fashion codes through unexpected styling, heightened femininity, exaggerated proportions and a renewed appetite for decoration. The season moves between polish and experimentation, with romantic transparency appearing alongside severe structure and traditional references transformed through contemporary silhouettes.

DOWNTOWN LAYERING

Layering becomes more instinctive and deliberately mismatched for SS27. Marie Adam-Leenaerdt, Cecilie Bahnsen, Balenciaga and JW Anderson combine pieces of different lengths, weights and attitudes, allowing shirting, tailoring, skirts and more decorative elements to overlap. The effect feels urban and individual rather than overly coordinated.

ORNATE & EMBELLISHED

Decoration returns with confidence. Marie Adam-Leenaerdt, Dries Van Noten, Loewe and Conner Ives explore embroidery, embellishment, decorative surfaces and vivid color, bringing a sense of richness back to the runway. Rather than being reserved for evening, ornate detailing becomes part of the wider SS27 wardrobe.

POWER POLISH

A more controlled form of dressing emerges through sharp silhouettes and precise styling. Khaite, Céline, Alaïa and JW Anderson offer different interpretations of polish, using strong outerwear, tailoring and streamlined proportions to create looks that feel authoritative without relying on conventional corporate suiting.

UNEXPECTED PEPLUMS

The peplum returns, but not in its traditionally ladylike form. Givenchy, Balenciaga and Loewe use volume around the waist to manipulate the silhouette, with sculptural flares, exaggerated shaping and asymmetric construction. What was once a familiar feminine detail becomes an opportunity to experiment with proportion.

SHEER ROMANCE

Transparency continues into SS27 with a distinctly romantic character. Marie Adam-Leenaerdt, Alaïa and Cecilie Bahnsen work with sheer fabrics, lace, embroidery and delicate layers, revealing the body while retaining softness and complexity. The trend speaks to a broader return to overt femininity across the season.

BOLD FEMININITY

Femininity becomes stronger and more direct. Alaïa, Jacquemus, Givenchy and Loewe explore body-conscious shapes, abbreviated hemlines, sculptural volume and sensual fabrics. Rather than treating feminine dressing as delicate, SS27 gives it greater confidence, physicality and visual impact.

EDGY PREP

Preppy codes are disrupted through proportion and styling. JW Anderson, Conner Ives and Loewe reinterpret polos, checks, shirting and collegiate references, pairing familiar pieces in ways that feel less traditional and more irreverent. The references remain recognizable, but the result is deliberately less proper.

TEXTURE X MONOCHROME

Monochrome dressing gains depth through surface and construction. Balenciaga, Alaïa and Marie Adam-Leenaerdt demonstrate how a restrained palette can amplify texture, using fringe, dimensional fabrics and sculptural treatments to create visual interest without relying on print or contrasting color.

STARK STRUCTURE

Against the softness elsewhere in the season, SS27 also makes a case for severity. Givenchy, Balenciaga and Partow use crisp shirting, elongated lines and architectural construction to create silhouettes defined by cut and form. The simplicity of the palette allows the structure of each garment to become the statement.

STATEMENT PRINTS

Print returns as a defining element of the look. Dries Van Noten, Céline, Marie Adam-Leenaerdt, Loewe and Conner Ives explore florals, painterly motifs and graphic patterns across dresses, skirts and tailoring. Rather than functioning as an accent, print often becomes the central idea around which the rest of the look is built.

EQUESTRIAN CODED

Equestrian references reappear through a contemporary lens. JW Anderson, Marie Adam-Leenaerdt and Loewe draw from riding jackets, leather, boots and countryside textiles, taking recognizable equestrian codes out of their traditional context and incorporating them into more directional silhouettes.

PROPORTION PLAY

SS27 continues fashion’s fascination with changing the relationship between clothing and the body. Givenchy and JW Anderson experiment with oversized shirting, abbreviated bottoms, elongated tops and expanded volumes. Scale becomes a design tool, transforming even recognizable wardrobe staples through unexpected dimensions.

Taken together, the SS27 runways point toward a season defined by contrast. Romance meets structure, polish is disrupted by unexpected proportion, and familiar references from prep to equestrian dressing are reconsidered for a more expressive wardrobe.
